Under Sink Dishwasher Using A Portable Dishwasher Conversion Kit

An under sink dishwasher is usually a standard dishwasher that’s plumbed in, sometimes it’s part of the kitchen styling. The advantage with these is they save counter top work space, as they’re already housed out of the way. Often they’ll come included as part of the package if you buy a new kitchen from a developer of kitchen fitting company.

Sometimes though you have the need to move things around in the kitchen. One thing we did was to move our countertop dishwasher under sink, to free up counter space. It meant we lost a small area of cupboard space in the kitchen, but as we have the store room we made better use of the storage in there.

I had researched a little online to see if there was such a thing as a portable dishwasher conversion kit and to be fair these are few & far between.
The only one I could really see which was a brand I knew was the Whirlpool portable dishwasher conversion kit, granted it’s not all that cheap, but heck it’s cheaper than a new dishwasher.
Commonly portable dishwashers are usually 18″ wide, I knew I had a bit of space to play about with, so I decided to pop in some small shelf space to store the detergent bottles on there.
I went ahead and ordered the Whirlpool portable dishwasher conversion kit.

As portable dishwashers can be plug-and-cord-connected and they are also able to share an outlet with another appliance, there’s no need to get a plumber or electrician in to do the work.
Shorten the power cord to the required length yourself and you’re saving money already.

Locating the Dishwasher

Locate the dishwasher ideally as close to the kitchen sink as possible. This helps with water flow both in and out. You don’t want to have to start putting loads of plumbing in place.
Portable dishwashers don’t use fixed pipework, here you’re going to have to make a few changes, but these are easy to do. The instructions in the kit are easy to follow. Hey if I can do it, then anyone can do it.
Unplug dishwasher or disconnect power. Shut off water supply then we need to disconnect supply & drain hoses from faucet.
Remove all items from inside the dishwasher such as cups, plates or dishes.

Fixing the under the sink dishwasher.

Tools Needed: Torx T15, Torx T20, Phillips Screwdriver, Adjustable Pliers, Wire Cutters, 1/4” Nut Driver, 5/16” Nut Driver and also a Standard Screwdriver

The portable dishwashers are usually on casters, so these need to be removed to stop the machine rolling. Usually these are easy to unscrew and take off.
Counter top portable dishwashers don’t have these, so that’s something else not to have to worry about. It does go without saying though, you can’t move a top opening machine and convert it into a under the sink dishwasher.
The same applies to portable dishwashers that have top-mounted controls, as you won’t be able to access the controls. Advantage with changing over the countertop dishwasher under sink is that it can sometimes just sit on the shelf in the open front cupboard space, but once again you need to make sure the shelf is strong enough to support the weight, so it’s better to place it on the bottom on the base unit. Yes this means having to bend down, but it will be safer and more sturdy.
