So you have plates, dishes, pots and glasses all cleaned in your dishwasher, which is great. But what about the rest of your kitchen area? If you’re the home chef who does a lot of food prep and cooking, you need to know your work surfaces are as clean as the dishes you’re cooking in and the plates you’ll be eating off.
If you ask most people about which part of the home they think harbors the most germs and bacteria, most people are likely to give the bathroom as their answer. After all, it is where everyone goes to wash off the dirt, sweat, grime that their bodies accumulated over the day. Therefore, it is only natural to assume that it is where the most germs lie. Contrary to this common belief, it is actually the kitchen that contains the most germs. As you know, germs prefer moist and warm areas with plenty of living creatures, and these characteristics perfectly apply to the kitchen. Read on to learn more about the different germs that lurk in your kitchen, how they can endanger your health and how to keep your kitchen clean and germ-free.
Kinds of Germs Found in the Kitchen
There are numerous types of germs and some of them are the ones most commonly found in your kitchen. Fungi is one of these common kitchen germs. Fungi are organisms that are unable to procure nutrients from air, soil or even water. Instead, they feed off other living creatures such as plants and human beings, making them parasitic in nature. Fungi thrive in damp and warm places such as an unused moist dish rag, the space under the sink and other inaccessible corners in your kitchen.
Another germ type that commonly breeds in kitchens is the virus. Viruses are also parasitic but they differ from fungi in the sense that they need to actually be inside their host in order to survive. This host can be an animal, a plant or a human being. However, a virus can also survive for a short period of time even when outside the host. People with weak immune systems are susceptible to these germs. Viruses can cause measles, the chickenpox and even the common flu.
The kitchen is where you and your family get your drinking water from. Unfortunately, this water can sometimes be contaminated and one of the most common germs that can contaminate water is protozoa. Drinking water that is polluted with protozoa can cause diarrhoea, severe stomach ache and fatigue.
Many families store, prepare and cook meat in their kitchens and even this meat can contain some germs. An example of these germs is salmonella which is commonly found in chicken meat and other poultry products. Salmonella can lead to health hazards such as vomiting, food poisoning, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and nausea. Places in the Kitchen Where Germs Reside
According to studies, here are the following surfaces and places in the kitchen where germs usually reside:
- Kitchen sponge, dishrag and other moist cleaning items in the kitchen
- Doorknobs and other handles (faucet, kitchen, etc.)
- Cutting board
- Refrigerator interior
- Can opener, spatula and other cooking utensils

Keeping Your Kitchen Germ-Free

- Dry sponges and rags after use and replace them on a weekly basis. Sponges are used to clean plates, glasses, food containers and other utensils while rags are meant to wipe counters, dining tables and other surfaces. Ironically, these cleaning items also contain the most amount of germs in the house. This is because they are often moist for long periods of time. In order to keep germs at bay, make sure you dry your sponge and rag right after every use. You can heat the sponge in the microwave for a minute or two and hang the rag so it air dries.
- Spray disinfectant all over the kitchen. Disinfectant is one of the best ways to eliminate germs so make sure you invest in a good disinfectant spray for your faucet, counters, refrigerator handles, trash bins, doorknobs and other surfaces that you often touch. If you’re scared of toxins and chemicals, look for an organic disinfectant.
- Stay away from the kitchen when you are sick. If you’re down with the flu or even the common cold then you should naturally refrain from stepping into the kitchen, much less touching the food and cooking utensils. Touching the food and surfaces will potentially spread your germs around.
Refrigerate food immediately. Raw and cooked food must never be left out in the open too long since it tends to attract more germs. Leaving food out also brings cockroaches, ants and even mice, which you definitely don’t want as guests in your kitchen.
